WebI rebuilt an old 6” Jet jointer and put in a helical carbide head. A world of difference! The helical head has less cutter head cutting at any single time so the chips come off smaller, unlike the straight knives. But the carbide cutters are the cat’s meow. The offset will cause one of the knives to cut off the raised track. Second, you can easily remove the tracks with a scraper and/or sanding. The finish preparation will remove the tracks without any problem. They are really not worth worring about. Howie.........

Take a sharpening stone, and with the jointer running, joint the knives by moving the stone across the outfeed table. You will need to continually flatten the stone, as the knives will cut it away quite quickly.

Run the lift screws into the cutter head so the blades are unsupported. Put a block of wood across the blade and tap it to move the blade down into the recess.
